How do I start spearfishing?
To start spearfishing, take a course that teaches breathing techniques, safety and how to use the equipment. Always start in shallow water, with an experienced buddy watching you from the surface.
What equipment do I need for spearfishing?
The basic kit is mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit, weight belt, speargun and a surface marker buoy. For beginners I recommend a 75 to 90 cm speargun and a 5 mm wetsuit in summer or 7 mm in winter.
Is spearfishing safe?
Spearfishing is safe when done correctly: never alone, always with a surface marker buoy, within your limits and after a course. The most important rule is a surface recovery at least twice as long as the dive.
Where can I go spearfishing in Naples?
The Gulf of Naples has many spots: the Posillipo coast outside the protected areas, Nisida, Ischia, Procida, the Sorrento Peninsula and Capri. Before every trip check the local ordinances and the limits of the marine protected areas, such as the Gaiola Underwater Park, where fishing is forbidden.
What are the spearfishing rules in Italy?
Recreational spearfishing is allowed only while breath-holding, without scuba tanks, and the speargun may be loaded only in the water. You need a surface marker buoy and must stay within 50 metres of it, keep away from beaches used by swimmers and not fish at night. The updated rules are in the 2026 regulations guide on the blog.
When is the best time to spearfish in the Gulf of Naples?
You can fish all year round. From late spring to autumn the water is warm and clear, with white seabream, mullet and hunting amberjack; in winter the water drops below 15 °C, you need a 7 mm wetsuit and the less crowded sea beds often give the best catches.
Do I need a course to go spearfishing?
It is not required by law, but it is the safest way to start. In a course you learn breathing, equalisation, recovery and how to rescue your buddy: the basics that prevent the most common accidents, such as blackout on ascent.
Which wetsuit should I choose for the Mediterranean?
A two-piece wetsuit, hooded jacket and high-waisted trousers, in open-cell neoprene. 5 mm is fine from May to October, 7 mm for the cold months. Fit matters more than camouflage: a wetsuit that lets water in makes you lose heat and shortens your breath-hold.
